Being a responsible business means taking into account a number of factors on the sustainability front. It is necessary to take great care over every aspect of production and be aware of the impact that our choices have on the quality of the environment and people’s lives.
We know that all of this starts with us.

Sustainability
We have always been devoted to analysing and reducing the impact of the industrial processes in the leather production cycle.
Every day, we analyse our processes, our products, and the surrounding environment, as we strive to find ethical new solutions with our team. We have taken a number of measures in our responsible production drive.
We have chosen to invest in our machinery, which features Industry 4.0 technology and limits the environmental impact of our production processes.

Our 4.0 dyeing department boasts a modern automated system that leads not only to products with a superior quality, but also to greater savings in energy, water and chemicals respect to the usual tannery standards.
Even our 4.0 finishing department characterized by a waterflow and smart grid technology, together with the usage mainly of water-based fixatives – i.e. solvent-free, guarantees a significant air pollution cut and important energy savings.

In our facility, we have a photovoltaic system with nominal power of 160 kWp/year, which caters to 25-30% of our energy needs. The use of this system and more than 200 LED lighting groups throughout the company premises cuts our energy consumption, thus reducing the environmental impact of our products.
Thanks to our constant investments, Fonpelli is one of the tanneries with the lower levels of energy consumption and water usage per square metre of leather processed.

Circular Economy
From recovering a by-product from the food industry to making a prized material that is used in a wide range of consumer goods, and to the recyle of our waste.
In sustainability assessments for the tanning industry, it is necessary to take into account a key factor: it is a highly successful example of a circular economy.
Despite what people tend to think, bovines are not killed to cater to the needs of the tanning industry. Instead, leather is made from a by-product of the food industry. It is for this very reason that we take a great deal of interest in all aspects of the production chain, from the well-being of the animals to the quality of the environments in which they live.
Thanks to the tanning process, animal hides are recovered and processed to create prized fashion and furnishings pieces. Unlike many other materials, such as synthetic fibres, leather is a valuable, durable material that can be salvaged and processed. It helps to prevent waste and means that there is no need to utilize new resources for the products that we buy.

We strive to find a circular approach in our every single action.
We give a new life to our waste. Indeed our tanned leather waste, such as trimmings, are transformed into organic fertilizers for the agricolture industry.
In addition, our products packaging is made of recycled and fully recyclable materials.

Our Certifications
Tangible proof of our responsible, dedicated approach.
Only part of our everyday efforts to take a truly responsible approach are underlined by our certifications. Nonetheless, they encapsulate the tangible success achieved thanks to our dedication on this front.
LWG – Gold Medal. Environmental protocol of the Leather Working Group, certified since 2020.
ISO 14001. Environmental Management System certification, earned in 2016.
Leather from Italy (UNI EN 16484). The conformity with the standard defines the Italian origin of Fonpelli’s leather production, in line with the international customs laws.
Raw Material Traceability (ICEC TS SC410) – bovine hides for leather goods, footwear and upholstery – Grade: 93/100. The acquired grade shows an average traceability degree back to the place of stock farm.
Raw Material Traceability (ICEC TS PC412) – Bovine Leather of South America origin – Grade: 95/100. The acquired grade shows an average traceability degree back to the place of stock farm. It shows also our supplu chain adherence to the DFCL policy (Deforestation and Conversion Free Leather).
We recover our hides from the food chain (UNI ISO / TS 17033:2020). The conformity with the standard shows that all our raw leather used by us is a by-product of the food industry.
